Electrician in Southside

Electrical help for Southside homes and businesses.

Southside is the dense, hilly neighborhood on Red Mountain just south of downtown Birmingham, running from Railroad Park to the mountain’s crest, with UAB and its hospitals at its core. Handy Dudes Electrical, licensed and insured and based in Pelham, serves Southside property owners and managers, from single houses to apartment buildings, condos and commercial spaces of every size.

Request service with the form on this page or call (205) 341-9500 Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. Tell us the address, what you are dealing with, and whether it is a house, a unit or a commercial space. If a building manager or association controls access, mention that too so scheduling goes smoothly.

Local conditions

A 1890s streetcar suburb with apartments, condos and Five Points South storefronts

Much of Southside was developed in the 1890s by John Phelan and Robert Jemison Sr. as a streetcar suburb. UAB’s growth helped stabilize the area in the late twentieth century, and Five Points South remains a long-standing dining and nightlife district. The neighborhood contains seven historic districts with an eclectic mix of houses built between 1890 and 1920, and the Five Points South district’s National Register nomination counts commercial buildings, dwellings, apartment buildings, offices and churches among its contributing resources.

The Vulcan statue is visible from most of the neighborhood. Newer apartments and condominiums have also been built as demand for housing here has grown. For electrical work that range matters: a century-old apartment building has different needs than a newer condo, and a Five Points storefront has different needs than either. We take repairs, outlet and switch work, panel upgrades and commercial maintenance, and we will say plainly if a job is not something we handle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have another question?
I own a unit in a Southside condo or apartment building. Can I hire you directly?

For work inside your own unit, such as outlets, switches, fixtures or a fan, you generally can, though it is worth telling your association or building manager. Shared panels, meters and building-wide systems usually belong to the building, so call us and we will talk through who has to sign off.

What kinds of commercial space do you work on near Five Points South?

Offices, retail spaces and HOAs are the core of our commercial work, covering repairs, maintenance and new installs. If your space is something else, such as a medical or specialty facility, call us and we will tell you whether it is something we handle.

Is a panel upgrade worth it in a century-old Southside house?

If the panel is original or undersized, has no room for new circuits, or you are adding central air, a remodel or an EV charger, it often is. We can look at what is installed and tell you honestly whether an upgrade is needed now or can wait.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Handy Dudes Electrical holds Alabama Electrical Contractor License #04824 and is insured, and our electrical work is done to code for your safety.
