Outlets & switches

The small parts of your electrical system that get used every day.

Outlets and switches wear out, get painted over, loosen in the wall and end up in the wrong place for the way you live. Handy Dudes Electrical installs, repairs and replaces outlets, switches and GFCIs for homes and commercial properties across the Birmingham metro. It looks like a small job, but it is live wiring, and the fix has to be right the first time.

When to call

Signs an outlet or switch needs attention

  • An outlet that is warm, discolored or smells like burning plastic: stop using it and call
  • A plug that falls out of the outlet or will not stay in
  • A switch that crackles, buzzes or feels hot
  • Outlets that stopped working, or a GFCI that will not reset
  • Two-prong outlets in a room full of three-prong plugs
  • Not enough outlets, so the room runs on extension cords

How it works

How an outlet or switch job goes

Simple repairs get handled quickly, and bigger ones get explained first.

  1. Tell us the symptom

Describe what the outlet or switch is doing, and where. A photo helps. Dead outlets sometimes trace back to a different one on the same circuit.

  2. Find the cause

We test the device, the connections and the circuit to learn whether it is a worn part, a loose wire or something upstream.

  3. Repair or replace

We make the repair, install the right device for the location, and test it before we leave.

Serving the Birmingham metro

Outlets and switches in older and newer Birmingham homes

Homes in the Birmingham metro span several building eras, and the outlets show it. Older houses in areas like Homewood, Forest Park and Avondale can still have two-prong outlets and too few places to plug in, while newer homes in Hoover, Chelsea and Helena more often need extra outlets for home offices, garages and outdoor spaces. We replace and add outlets and switches throughout the metro.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have another question?
What is a GFCI outlet and where do I need one?

A GFCI outlet shuts power off quickly if it senses current leaking where it should not, which protects you from shock. They are generally used where electricity and water meet, such as kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoors. Read our GFCI guide for more.

Why does my GFCI keep tripping?

Moisture in the outlet or in a device plugged into it is the most common reason, but a failing GFCI or a wiring fault can also cause it. If it will not stay reset, have it checked rather than taping over the problem.

Can you replace my old two-prong outlets?

Yes. We replace old two-prong outlets. How we do it depends on what is in the wall, such as whether there is a ground wire, so we look at the circuit first and explain the options for your home.

Can you add an outlet where there is not one?

Yes. We add outlets for kitchens, offices, garages, patios and anywhere you rely on extension cords. The wall construction and where the nearest power is affect what is involved.

An outlet stopped working. Is the whole circuit bad?

Not necessarily. A tripped GFCI or breaker, or one failed device upstream, can make several outlets go dead. We trace it to the actual cause. See electrical troubleshooting.

Do you replace switches and install dimmers?

Yes. We replace worn switches, install dimmers and set up lights that can be controlled from more than one place.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Handy Dudes Electrical holds Alabama Electrical Contractor License #04824 and is insured, and our electrical work is done to code for your safety.
