Electrician in Forest Park
Electrical help for Forest Park homes and businesses.
Forest Park is one of Birmingham’s historic residential neighborhoods, on the north slope of Red Mountain around Highland Golf Course and Clairmont Avenue, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Handy Dudes Electrical, licensed and insured and based in Pelham, serves Forest Park homeowners who want lights, outlets and panels that suit a house roughly a century old.
Houses this old have usually been changed many times by the people who lived in them. Request service on this page or call (205) 341-9500 Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, tell us what you are seeing, and we will take a careful look at what is behind the walls.

Houses from 1906 on: what a historic neighborhood means for wiring
The Jemison Company began developing Forest Park in 1906, with streets that follow the hillside contours and a streetcar line to downtown. The National Register record gives 1900 to 1924 as the district’s period of significance and lists Bungalow/Craftsman and revival styles, and local write-ups also mention Tudor Revival, Neoclassical and Queen Anne homes. Later subdivisions continued the hillside-following street pattern over the next two decades. A small village of shops and restaurants sits within the neighborhood, and the golf course occupies the site of a lake that existed around 1911.
Houses of this age were built long before modern electrical loads, and most have been added onto over time. It is common for older homes to have few outlets per room, mismatched or worn switches, and panels sized for a different era. We can look at what is there and replace or repair it in a way that fits the house. If you are not sure whether an exterior change needs approval, ask the city before starting work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have another question? Can you replace old fixtures in a historic Forest Park house without losing its character?
Yes. We replace fixtures with new ones and also install fixtures you already own or have sourced. Tell us the look you want to keep. If your home is in a historic district, check with the city on any exterior changes, such as porch lights, before we start.
Why does my Forest Park house have so few outlets?
Houses from the early 1900s were built before people plugged in as many devices as they do now. Outlets and circuits were added over the years, or never were. We can add outlets where you need them, but the panel and existing circuits decide what is practical, so we look at both.
Is it normal for lights to dim when the air conditioner starts in an older house?
A brief dip can happen, but frequent or deep dimming can point to an overloaded circuit, a loose connection or an undersized panel. Because older wiring has often been modified over time, it is worth having someone trace it. Request service and describe what happens and when.
Are you licensed and insured?
