Electrical troubleshooting & repair
Electrical problems have a cause. We find it.
A breaker that keeps tripping, an outlet that quit, or lights that flicker are symptoms, and the same symptom can come from very different causes. Some are simple and harmless. Some are not. Handy Dudes Electrical diagnoses and repairs electrical problems in homes and commercial properties across the Birmingham metro, and we tell you what we found before we fix it.
Tripped & Failing Breakers
Find out whether a breaker is tripping from an overloaded circuit, a fault or a worn breaker, and fix the real problem.
Dead Outlets & Switches
Trace outlets and switches that have stopped working back to the failed device, connection or upstream cause.

Test and isolate

Explain and fix
We explain what we found, go over the options, and make the repair once you are comfortable with the plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have another question? Why does my breaker keep tripping?
A breaker trips to protect the wiring from too much current. The usual causes are too many devices on one circuit, a short or ground fault, or a breaker that has worn out. Read why breakers trip. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips right away.
Are flickering lights dangerous?
Not always. A bad bulb or incompatible dimmer is harmless, but a loose connection, especially one that also sounds, smells or feels hot, is a safety problem. If in doubt, switch off the circuit and call.
An outlet is dead. What should I check first?
Check for a tripped GFCI outlet and a tripped breaker. If both are fine and the outlet is still dead, the cause is in the wiring or the device, and it is time for an electrician.
What should I do if I smell burning from an outlet or panel?
Switch off the power to that area at the breaker if you can do so safely, stay away from it and call a licensed electrician. If you see smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 911.
Can you find the cause of an electrical problem, not just replace parts?
That is the point of troubleshooting. We test the circuit and the connections so the repair addresses the cause rather than swapping devices and hoping.
Do you repair electrical problems in commercial buildings?
