Electrician in Alabaster

Electrical help for Alabaster homes and businesses.

Alabaster is named for the local limestone, and its story starts with industry: the Siluria textile mill in 1896, then the Alabaster Lime Company’s operations in the 1920s and 1930s. Today it is a Shelby County city of more than 33,000 people on Highway 31. Handy Dudes Electrical is a licensed, insured contractor (License #04824) with an office in nearby Pelham, and our team works throughout Alabaster for homeowners and commercial properties.

Alabaster homeowners call us about outlets, switches, panels and fans. HOA boards and business owners call about repairs and lighting. Request a quote with the form on this page, or call (205) 341-9500, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If you are not sure whether your project fits, describe it and we will tell you.

Local conditions

Electrical work in a former mill-and-lime town that kept growing

Alabaster and Siluria grew up as neighbors. A village housed the textile workers at Siluria, and Alabaster took shape in the early 1920s partly as housing for lime company employees. Siluria incorporated in 1954 and merged with Alabaster in 1971, and the old Buck Creek mill site is now Buck Creek Park. Shelby Memorial Hospital, the county’s first, opened in Alabaster in 1959. The next big wave came in the late 1970s and 1980s, when many people were leaving Birmingham for communities to the south, and enrollment at Thompson High School jumped.

That timeline gives Alabaster houses from several generations: older homes that began as worker housing, houses from the decades in between, and subdivisions from the 1980s and later. Each age has its own typical wear. Older homes tend to have panels and outlets sized for a smaller load, and the 1980s homes are now old enough for tired switches, dated fixtures and breakers that act up. Because Alabaster has a mix of ages within the same neighborhoods, we look at each house rather than assume.

Common calls

What Alabaster customers call us for.

  • Worn outlets in a 1980s subdivision home

Outlets and switches that get daily use wear out. We replace them, add GFCI protection where it belongs, and install new outlets where the room needs them.

  • Older homes with undersized panels

Houses that began as worker housing were not wired for today’s loads. We replace outdated or undersized panels and upgrade the service.

  • HOA entrances and Highway 31 businesses

Entrance lighting, clubhouses and storefronts need ongoing care. We handle commercial repairs, maintenance and new installs for HOAs, offices and retail.

  • Ceiling fans in aging homes

Replacing a tired fan, or adding one in a room without it, takes proper support and wiring. We install and replace ceiling fans, including remote setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have another question?
My house is in the old Siluria area. Does the age of a mill-village house matter for electrical work?

Yes. Houses that began as worker housing were built long before today’s appliances and electronics, so we look at the panel, circuits and outlets before adding anything. Alabaster can have several eras within a few blocks, so we assess house by house.

Our house went up during the 1980s boom. What usually wears out first?

Usually the parts used every day: switches and outlets, dated light fixtures and fans, and sometimes a breaker that trips. We troubleshoot to find the cause first, then repair or replace. If something bigger shows up, such as an outdated panel, we will tell you.

Our Alabaster HOA needs work on entrance and clubhouse lighting. Is that a job for you?

It can be. We do commercial electrical work for HOAs, offices and retail: repairs, maintenance and new installs. Send the board’s contact and a description of the lighting in the request form, or call (205) 341-9500 during business hours. We will tell you whether it is something we handle.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Handy Dudes Electrical holds Alabama Electrical Contractor License #04824 and is insured, and our electrical work is done to code for your safety.
