Ceiling fan installation
A fan that is safe overhead, and quiet.
A ceiling fan is a heavy, moving object hanging over your head, so the box it hangs from and the wiring behind it matter as much as the fan. Handy Dudes Electrical installs and replaces ceiling fans throughout the Birmingham metro and sets up the remotes and wall controls that run them. Alabama summers make a fan one of the most used things in the house, and it should be installed like it.
New Fan Installation
Install a ceiling fan where you only have a light fixture, or where there is nothing yet, with the support it needs.
Fan Replacement
Take down an old, noisy or wobbling fan and install a new one in its place.
Remote & Wall Control Setup
Wire and set up remotes, pull chains and wall controls so the fan and light respond the way they should.
Fan & Light Kits
Fans with integrated lights wired so the fan and the light can be controlled separately.
Porches & Patios
Outdoor and covered-porch fans that are rated for the damp conditions they live in.
Fans That Hum or Wobble
Find out why a fan hums, clicks, wobbles or stops responding to its controls.
When to call
When a ceiling fan job needs an electrician
- You want a fan where there is only a light fixture now
- The ceiling box is not marked as fan-rated, or you cannot tell what it is
- An existing fan wobbles badly, clicks or has begun to sag
- The fan works but the light does not, or the controls do the wrong thing
- You want separate switches for the fan and the light
- A porch or patio fan that needs a damp-rated model hung and wired
How it works
How a ceiling fan install goes
The fan is the easy part. The ceiling is what we check first.
Look at the ceiling
We look at the room, the ceiling height, the box and the wiring that is already there, and talk through where the fan should hang.
Support and wire it
A fan needs a box that is made to carry it. We make sure the fan is supported correctly, then wire the fan, the light and the controls.
Balance and test
We mount and balance the fan, check every speed and the light, and make sure the remote or wall control does what it should.

Ceiling fans for Birmingham homes
Birmingham summers are long and humid, so fans carry a lot of the cooling load in bedrooms, family rooms and screened porches. Many older homes in neighborhoods like Homewood and Crestwood have a light fixture in the middle of the ceiling and no fan at all, and swapping a light for a fan is a common request. Newer homes in Hoover and Alabaster often come with fans that need replacing or a covered patio that wants one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have another question? Can you put a ceiling fan where there is only a light?
Often, yes. The fixture box has to be able to carry the weight and motion of a fan, so we check what is in the ceiling first. If it is not fan-rated we talk through how to support it properly.
What is a fan-rated box?
It is an electrical box made and marked to support a moving ceiling fan, which a standard light box is not. Hanging a fan from the wrong box is a common cause of wobbling and can be a safety problem. Read our ceiling fan guide.
Will you set up the remote?
Yes. Ceiling fan installation includes wiring and setting up the remote or wall control that comes with the fan, so it works the way you expect.
Can you replace my old ceiling fan?
Yes. We remove the old fan and install the new one, and check the box and wiring while it is down.
Why does my ceiling fan wobble?
Loose blade brackets, unbalanced blades and a loose mounting are the usual causes. If the box itself is not secure, that is a safety issue and worth having an electrician look at.
Can I put a fan on a covered porch or patio?
Yes, as long as the fan is rated for damp or wet locations. We install outdoor-rated fans on covered porches and patios.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Handy Dudes Electrical holds Alabama Electrical Contractor License #04824 and is insured, and our electrical work is done to code for your safety.
