Electrician in Leeds
Electrical help for Leeds homes and businesses.
Leeds is one of the few Birmingham-area cities that reaches into three counties: it lies primarily in Jefferson County, with parts in St. Clair and Shelby. It began as a stagecoach stop and railroad town, was incorporated in 1887, and grew around the Standard Portland Cement Company, founded in 1906, whose plant, now run by Lehigh, still operates. Handy Dudes Electrical serves Leeds from our Pelham office, covering homes, rentals and commercial properties.
With a historic downtown, a long industrial history and Interstate 20 running through, Leeds has older properties and newer ones on the same few roads. Request service through the form on this page or call on a weekday. Give us the street address, since the county line can matter when a job needs a permit.
Local conditions
Three counties, one downtown, and a lot of older buildings
Leeds has a National Register-listed downtown historic district, a railroad depot from around 1875, the Jonathan Bass House from about 1865 and Rowan Oaks, a home from around 1904. Not every building in town is that old, but the older ones share a pattern: they were wired for a different era and have been added to since. When a house or storefront has had several owners and several remodels, outlets and switches stop matching, circuits get shared in odd ways, and breakers trip because too much has landed on one run of wire.
The city is also investing in its center. Its Wikipedia entry notes a 2023 downtown revitalization project with the Alabama Department of Transportation that will fund new sidewalks and lighting, which is a natural moment for downtown property owners to look at their own lighting too. With Lehigh’s plant running and a Norfolk Southern line through town, Leeds has plenty of industry, but our commercial work is for offices, retail, HOAs and rentals rather than industrial plants.
Common calls
What Leeds customers call us for.
Downtown storefront lighting
Older storefronts often have dim, uneven lighting. We install indoor and recessed lighting that makes the space work for customers and staff.
Outlets in older houses
Houses that have changed hands several times tend to have mismatched or worn outlets and switches. We replace and repair them, including GFCIs where they belong.
Panel for a remodel
A kitchen remodel or an added room can push an older panel past its limit. We replace outdated or undersized panels and upgrade service.
HOA and rental common areas
Entry lighting, breezeway fixtures and shared outlets wear out and need repair. We handle commercial electrical work for HOAs, rentals and small offices.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have another question?I own a storefront in downtown Leeds. Can you update the lighting?
Yes. Interior lighting changes are a matter of fixtures, switching and circuits, which is what we do. If your building is in the historic district, check with the city before changing anything visible from the street. We can handle the electrical side, including new fixtures, recessed lighting and added circuits.
How big a generator would a Leeds house need?
It depends on what you want to run during an outage: just the essentials, or the whole house including heating and air. We work that out during the consultation by looking at your panel and appliances before recommending a Generac unit. Sizing by guess leads to a unit that struggles or one that costs more than it should.
Why do my lights dim when the air conditioner or dryer starts?
A brief dim when a large motor starts can be normal, but frequent or noticeable dimming, buzzing or warm outlets can point to a loose connection or an overloaded circuit. We trace which circuits are involved and repair the cause. If the problem is on the utility’s side, we will say so.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Handy Dudes Electrical holds Alabama Electrical Contractor License #04824 and is insured, and our electrical work is done to code for your safety.
