Panel upgrades

Your electrical panel is the heart of the system.

Every circuit in your building runs through the electrical panel, and an old or undersized one limits everything attached to it. Handy Dudes Electrical replaces outdated panels and upgrades electrical service for homes and commercial properties across the Birmingham metro. If you are adding an EV charger, a generator or an addition, or your breakers keep tripping, the panel is often where the conversation starts.

  • Panel Replacement

Remove an old, worn or outdated panel and install a new one with breakers sized and labeled for your circuits.

  • Service Upgrades

Increase your electrical service capacity for added loads, such as an addition, a new kitchen or HVAC.

  • Room for an EV Charger

Make sure the panel can carry a new Level 2 EV charger, and upgrade it if it cannot.

  • Backup Power Readiness

Prepare the panel for a whole-house generator and the transfer switch that connects it.

  • Breaker Replacement

Replace breakers that are worn, tripping unusually or no longer reset.

  • Commercial Panels

Upgrade or replace panels for offices, retail spaces and rental properties.

When to call

Signs it may be time to upgrade your panel

  • Breakers that trip often, or that will not reset
  • Fuses instead of breakers, or a panel that is decades old
  • A panel that is warm, buzzes, crackles or shows rust, scorching or moisture
  • You are adding an EV charger, a generator, a hot tub, an addition or new HVAC
  • Lights dimming whenever a large appliance starts
  • No open breaker spaces to add a circuit

How it works

How a panel upgrade goes

A bigger job than most, so we keep the steps clear.

  1. Assess the panel and the loads

We look at the existing panel, the service coming in, and what you are running or planning to add, then recommend what size and what work make sense.

  2. Plan the work

We talk through the scope and schedule and what to expect, including coordination with your electric utility and the local inspection office where required. A panel change means your power will be off while we work.

  3. Replace, label and test

Our licensed electricians install the new panel, connect and label the circuits, test everything and walk you through what changed.

Panel upgrades in older and newer Birmingham homes

Panel work in the Birmingham metro tends to fall into two groups. Older homes in places like Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook and Birmingham may still have the original panel from decades ago, sized for a house that ran far fewer devices. Newer homes in Hoover, Chelsea and Helena may be fine today but run out of capacity when an EV charger or generator goes in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have another question?
How do I know if my panel needs to be replaced?

Frequent tripping, rust or scorch marks, a warm or noisy panel, fuses, and no room for new circuits are the common signs. Our panel upgrade guide goes through them. An electrician can look at yours and tell you where it stands.

What is the difference between a panel replacement and a service upgrade?

A panel replacement swaps the panel itself. A service upgrade increases the capacity of the electrical service coming into the building, which can involve the meter and the utility. Many projects involve both. We will tell you which one your home needs.

Do I need a bigger panel for an EV charger or generator?

Not always, but often. A Level 2 charger or a generator transfer switch adds a significant load, so we check the panel’s capacity first and tell you whether it can handle the addition. See EV charger installation and generators.

Will the power be off during a panel upgrade?

Yes. The power to the building has to be off while the panel is swapped. We will plan the timing with you so you know how long to expect to be without power.

Do panel upgrades need a permit?

Panel work is typically permitted and inspected, and the rules depend on your city or county. We talk through what applies to your address as part of the plan.

Do you upgrade panels for businesses?

Yes. We upgrade and replace panels for offices, retail spaces and rental properties. See our commercial electrical page.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Handy Dudes Electrical holds Alabama Electrical Contractor License #04824 and is insured, and our electrical work is done to code for your safety.
