Electrician in Pinson
Electrical help for Pinson homes and businesses.
Pinson incorporated as a city in March 2004, but parts of it are much older. Inside its limits are the Palmerdale Homesteads, the first of five farmers’ resettlement communities built in Alabama under the New Deal: 102 small homesteads put up between 1935 and 1937 for low-income Birmingham-area families who were meant to grow part of their own food. Handy Dudes Electrical serves Pinson homeowners with licensed electrical work from our Pelham office.
Before 2004, Pinson was counted as part of the larger Pinson-Clay-Chalkville census area, so the name can mean either the city or the wider community. The city is also home to Turkey Creek Nature Preserve and the Alabama Butterbean Festival. If you are not sure which side of the line you are on, give us your street address when you request service.
Local conditions
Depression-era homesteads and rural lots
A Palmerdale homestead was a small house on a plot of land, built in the mid-1930s, and the oldest are now around ninety years old. Houses that age have usually been remodeled, added onto and wired in sections by different owners, which is where mystery circuits, mismatched outlets and overloaded breakers come from. When the layout of a house has changed a few times, its electrical rarely changed in step. We trace circuits, repair what is not working, and replace outlets, switches, fixtures and panels as needed.
Pinson has a nature preserve and a butterbean festival inside the city limits, and it reads as more country than much of the Birmingham area. Houses on bigger lots tend to want outdoor lighting for driveways and yards, porches call for fans, and any house that has been added onto over the decades benefits from a look at the panel. We handle lighting installation, ceiling fans and panel upgrades, and we will tell you when something is outside what we do rather than guess at it.
Common calls
What Pinson customers call us for.
Panel for an older small house
Small older homes were wired for a handful of loads. When the house now runs central air and a modern kitchen, we replace the panel and upgrade the service.
Added outlets in older rooms
Rooms with one outlet cause extension-cord clutter. We install, repair and replace outlets and switches, and add GFCIs where they belong.
Outdoor lighting for rural lots
A dark driveway or barn path is a hazard. We install outdoor lighting with the switching and timers you want.
Porch ceiling fans
A porch fan makes a summer evening usable. We install and replace ceiling fans and set up remote controls.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have another question?I live in one of the old Palmerdale homesteads. Is there anything special about working on it?
Houses from the resettlement era were small and simple, and decades of changes mean no two are alike. We do not know what is behind a wall until we look, so we start with the panel and trace the circuits you use. We tell you what we find, and quote repairs from there.
How do I add outlets to a small older house without tearing up the walls?
The options depend on how the house is built. Sometimes an outlet can be added by extending an existing circuit, and sometimes a new circuit makes more sense, especially for a kitchen or an appliance. We look at what is there, explain the choices and quote the one that fits.
Can a ceiling fan go in a room with a low ceiling?
Often yes, using a low-profile fan designed to mount tight to the ceiling. We look at the ceiling height, the box and how the room is used before recommending one, since a fan that hangs too low is a hazard. We handle installation, replacement and remote setup.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Handy Dudes Electrical holds Alabama Electrical Contractor License #04824 and is insured, and our electrical work is done to code for your safety.
