Electrician in Clay

Electrical help for Clay homes and businesses.

Clay is named for the red clay soil of northeastern Jefferson County. The first settlers arrived around 1806, the community grew up along the old Georgia Road, and residents voted in June 2000 to incorporate, which made Clay a city. Mount Calvary Presbyterian Church, whose congregation has met since 1806 and is described as the oldest church in Jefferson County, still stands there. Handy Dudes Electrical serves Clay from our Pelham office.

Clay is a younger municipality than its history suggests, and nearby Chalkville later became part of the city. The name Clay is also still used for the wider area people once counted together with Pinson and Chalkville. If you are not sure whether your house is inside the city, give us your street address when you request service and we will work out which rules apply.

Local conditions

A young city on old roads

Census counts show Clay rising from about 4,900 residents in 2000 to about 9,700 in 2010, so much of the housing is a patchwork of subdivisions built at different times rather than one era. The January 2012 EF3 tornado that did its worst damage in nearby Center Point also damaged homes in several Clay subdivisions, and a good deal of repair work followed. Houses of very different ages therefore share the same streets and school zones, and the electrical needs vary just as much.

Whatever its age, a house here tends to bring up a familiar set of requests. People want ceiling fans for porches and bedrooms, outdoor lighting for driveways and yards, a Level 2 charger in the garage, or a circuit traced when a breaker trips. Clay also has landmarks that shape how people use the outdoors, including Cosby Lake and Alabama Caverns, once tourist draws, and three city parks. Subdivision associations and rentals call us for commercial electrical work too.

Common calls

What Clay customers call us for.

  • Ceiling fan for a porch or bedroom

We install and replace ceiling fans and set up remotes, after checking that the box and wiring suit the fan.

  • Driveway and yard lighting

Longer driveways and larger yards mean dark stretches. We install outdoor lighting with the switching or timers you want.

  • Level 2 charger at home

A dedicated circuit in the garage is the simple way to charge an EV. We install Level 2 chargers for homes and businesses.

  • Common-area lighting for an HOA

Entry signs, clubhouse entries and shared walkways need working lights. We repair and maintain lighting and circuits for HOAs and small commercial properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have another question?
Can you add lighting along a long driveway at my house in Clay?

Yes. We would look at where power can come from, how far the run is and how you want the lights controlled, whether by a switch, a timer or both. Outdoor fixtures and wiring need to be rated for weather. Describe the layout on the request form and send a photo if you can.

Our subdivision’s HOA wants the entrance lighting repaired. Do you handle that?

Yes. We do repairs, maintenance and new installs for HOAs, offices and retail. Tell us what is not working and where, and whether the board needs a written quote. We will trace the problem, repair it and can replace fixtures and circuits as needed.

Is it worth replacing all the light fixtures when we update the house?

Often it is easier and neater to do them together, since we are already working with the wiring and switches. Replacing fixtures is simple when the existing boxes are sound. We can look at each room, point out any boxes that need attention and quote the whole job.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Handy Dudes Electrical holds Alabama Electrical Contractor License #04824 and is insured, and our electrical work is done to code for your safety.
