Electrician in Montevallo
Electrical help for Montevallo homes and businesses.
Montevallo is a college town with a long memory. Jesse Wilson’s homestead on a hill near Wilson’s Creek became a settlement known as Wilson’s Hill, and residents renamed it Montevallo, Italian for the hill in the valley, hoping the University of Alabama would locate there. It did not, but the school that came in 1896 became today’s University of Montevallo, with around 3,000 students. Handy Dudes Electrical serves Montevallo homeowners, landlords and businesses from Pelham.
The city incorporated in 1848, and its own utilities page lists Alabama Power as the electric provider. A plaque on Reynolds Cemetery Road marks the geographic center of Alabama. Call on a weekday or use the form to tell us about the property and the problem, and a licensed contractor will follow up with you.

Pre-1900 houses, company-built housing and student rentals
Montevallo’s housing includes some of the oldest in Shelby County. The King House dates to 1823, the McKibbon House to 1900, and company-owned worker housing for the town’s coal mine started going up in 1890. The mine closed in 1946, after which the university became the major employer. A house from those eras has seen several generations of wiring methods and plenty of added circuits. Our work in them is practical: trace what is not working, repair or replace outlets and switches, and upgrade an undersized panel when the loads have outgrown it.
With a university in town, rentals are a large part of the housing picture. Landlords turning over a unit between semesters often need outlets and switches replaced, GFCI outlets that reset properly, and fixtures swapped out. Shoal Creek Park, Orr Park and the American Village add public and commercial activity to the mix, and for commercial property owners we handle repairs, maintenance and new installs for offices, retail and associations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have another question? Can you work in a Montevallo house that predates 1900?
Yes. We do not guess about what is behind the walls of an older house, so we begin with the panel and the circuits you use most, then tell you what we found. Repairs and upgrades are quoted from there, and if something is outside what we do, we will say so.
Why do some rooms in my older Montevallo rental only have one or two outlets?
Houses from earlier eras were built when people owned far fewer electrical devices, so rooms often have too few outlets. We can install additional outlets or replace worn ones, and we can look at whether the circuit can handle what you plug in.
Can you replace a light fixture in a historic house without harming the trim?
We replace light fixtures carefully and will ask what you want preserved before we start. The first step is checking the box and the wiring behind the old fixture. If you have an antique fixture you want restored, call us and we will tell you whether we handle it.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Handy Dudes Electrical holds Alabama Electrical Contractor License #04824 and is insured, and our electrical work is done to code for your safety.
