Electrician in Columbiana
Electrical help for Columbiana homes and businesses.
Columbiana has been the seat of Shelby County since 1826, when it was chosen over Calera and Montevallo. It was first called Columbia, renamed Columbiana in 1832 and incorporated in 1837, with limits that reached a quarter mile in each direction from the public square. Handy Dudes Electrical serves Columbiana homeowners, landlords and business owners from our office in Pelham, also in Shelby County.
The square is still the center of town. The 1854 courthouse, now the Shelby County Museum and Archives, is there, and the current marble courthouse, built from 1905 to 1908, stands two blocks north. Around them are older storefronts, offices and houses. Request service through the form or call during weekday hours.
Local conditions
County-seat offices, old storefronts and houses around the square
Columbiana’s age is the story here. The town grew around an iron foundry, which Union forces destroyed along with the Shelby Iron Works and the railroad on March 31, 1865. The older buildings near the square have since passed through many tenants and renovations. In older commercial buildings, lighting is often the first thing owners change, followed by added outlets for equipment and circuits that were never planned for modern offices. In older houses, it is usually the panel, dead outlets and dated fixtures.
As the seat of Shelby County government, Columbiana has the offices and small businesses that gather around a courthouse, and that means commercial electrical work of the kind we do: repairs, maintenance and new installs for offices and retail. We plan the work around your business hours, and our own office line is open weekdays from 8 to 5 if you want to talk through timing. Say what you need on the request form and we will reply.
Common calls
What Columbiana customers call us for.
Storefront and office lighting
Older commercial space often has uneven, dated lighting. We install indoor and recessed lighting that fits how the space is used.
Chandelier or fixture swap in an older home
Replacing a fixture in an older house starts with checking the box and wiring behind it. We replace light fixtures and make the connection safely.
Office suites that outgrew their circuits
Computers, printers and space heaters on one run of wire make for tripped breakers. We add circuits and repair existing ones for offices and retail.
Shared circuits that act up
Outlets that die when another room’s light is on usually share a circuit in an odd way. We trace the circuit and fix the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have another question? Can you work in an office near the Columbiana square without disrupting my business?
We plan the work around your hours, and for commercial jobs we begin by understanding the existing panel and circuits. Tell us what the space is used for, when you are open and what you want changed, and we will talk through timing before we schedule anything.
Can you replace a chandelier in an older home?
Yes. We replace light fixtures including chandeliers, after checking that the box and wiring behind them can safely carry the new fixture. If it is an antique you want restored, call us and we will tell you whether that is something we handle.
Can recessed lights go into the ceiling of an older house?
Often they can, but it depends on how the ceiling is built, what is above it and how the room is switched. We look at the room, explain what is possible and quote it. Describe the room and the ceiling on the request form.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Handy Dudes Electrical holds Alabama Electrical Contractor License #04824 and is insured, and our electrical work is done to code for your safety.
